UV Protection
A furling sail lives rolled up in the sun, and UV is what kills cloth and stitching over time. A cover on the exposed leech and foot is the single best life-extender for a furling headsail.

Reinforcement
The head, tack, and clew take the concentrated loads. Reinforcing them spreads the load and stops the tear-out that ends a sail early.
