Sail graphics are matched to your sail’s fabric and aerodynamic requirements. A heavy Dacron cruising mainsail, a high-modulus membrane, and an ultralight nylon spinnaker each use distinct production methods to ensure long service life, zero peeling, and optimal flying shape.
4 Production Methods
We build graphics using four distinct production methods, chosen according to cloth type, weight sensitivity, and artwork complexity:
1. Cut Insignia (Laser-Cut Adhesive Cloth)
- Process: Pre-colored, marine-grade Dacron adhesive cloth is precision laser-cut on our CNC cutting tables, weeded, and pressure-bonded to the sail.
- Best for: Boat manufacturer insignias (Beneteau, Jeanneau, Catalina, etc.), national letters, sail numbers, and single-color text.
- Fabric compatibility: Woven Dacron mainsails and headsails.
- Advantages: Razor-sharp solid edges, maximum UV durability, zero ink fading, and permanent marine adhesion.
2. Printed Insignia (Digital Print on Adhesive Cloth)
- Process: Multi-color graphics, gradients, and fine details are digitally printed onto white insignia cloth, contour-cut around the artwork perimeter, and applied to the sail.
- Best for: Multi-color club burgees, detailed company emblems, and sponsor badges under $2.0,\text{m}^2$.
- Fabric compatibility: Woven Dacron and cruising laminates.
- Engineering note: Adhesive cloth adds a structural layer. For graphics larger than $2,\text{m}^2$, direct printing is recommended to prevent localized stiffness.
3. Direct Printing (Direct-to-Cloth Digital Print)
- Process: Large-format digital textile printers print ink directly onto raw sailcloth panels before assembly and seam stitching.
- Best for: Spinnaker artwork, large sponsor graphics, and racing sails.
- Fabric compatibility: Lightweight spinnaker nylon, code zero laminates, and membrane skins.
- Advantages: Zero extra weight. The ink bonds directly into the fiber weave with no added material layer, keeping downwind sails light and responsive in light air.
5. Multi-Color Panels (Custom Nested Panel Layout)
- Process: Rather than applying surface ink, the visual design is built into the sail’s geometry. Panels are cut from multiple rolls of colored nylon and stitched with structural load seams.
- Best for: Bold geometric color schemes, chevrons, horizontal stripes, and tri-color downwind designs.
- Fabric compatibility: Downwind spinnakers and gennakers.
- Pricing: Multi-color layouts require individual roll changes, separate vacuum-table nesting passes, and color-coded loft assembly. A +15% base cloth surcharge applies.

Configuring Graphics in the Editor
The SurgeSails configurator provides full control over logo placement, sizing, and pricing in real time:
- Upload Artwork: Upload your logo in vector format (SVG, AI, PDF) or high-resolution PNG with a transparent background. The editor automatically detects the image dimensions and locks the aspect ratio.
- Set Target Width: Enter your desired width in millimeters (e.g. $1800,\text{mm}$). The system automatically calculates the corresponding height and sail area.
- Interactive 2D Placement: Position your graphic visually on the sail canvas. The coordinates are measured from the Tack origin $(X, Y)$, allowing you to verify clearance from reef patches, battens, and spreader chafe zones.
- Transparent Pricing:
- Custom Logos: Billed dynamically at $$60.00 / \text{m}^2$ based on the graphic footprint.
- Multi-Color Downwind Panels: When you select two or more distinct panel colors on a spinnaker or gennaker, the $+15%$ fabric surcharge is calculated and displayed automatically.
Artwork & File Preparation
To ensure clean reproduction on full-scale sails:
- Vector formats preferred: Submit artwork in Vector PDF, AI, EPS, or SVG with all text converted to outlines.
- Bitmap files: High-resolution PNG or TIFF files (transparent background) must be at least 150 DPI at full output scale.
- Color matching: Specify Pantone (PMS) Solid Coated codes or CMYK values.
- Loft proofing: Every custom graphic order receives a 2D scale layout proof for final review before cutting and printing begin.
